In maths class on Thursday I asked the question how to create a repeating pattern by moving only one glass from its original position.

The glasses started in this order here:

The first three glasses are full of water, and the last two are empty.
However this is not the position that I want them to finish in. What I want is a repeating pattern following this sequence:

Full, Empty, Full, Empty, Full

It would look like this:

After much discussion and some creative ideas we discovered that there is only one way to create this pattern, and it required us to think creatively. There is no possible way to reposition only one glass to create this pattern, but there is a way to create the pattern by only moving one glass. The trick is only one glass moves and is then replaced in the same location. The change happens while moving the glass. Instead of repositioning the glass the trick is to tip it, transfering the contents into one of the empty glasses.
